The Shibari Dictionary is a project dedicated to chronicling and recording the use of terms specific to the practice of Shibari and Kinbaku. The naming of shibari, even by Japanese masters is quite ad hoc and confusing, which is where the need for a “big picture” dictionary arises. Each shibari community, school, or studio will use terms in somewhat different ways to suit their needs and culture.
Our commitment is to accuracy and authenticity in documenting Shibari terminology. Each entry in the dictionary is carefully reviewed and categorized based on available documentation and research. Where definitive proof isn't available, entries are clearly marked as contemporary usage, personal opinion, or regional slang/variations.
The Shibari Dictionary grows through the active participation of the shibari/kinbaku/rope community. We welcome submissions for new terms and revisions or additions to existing entries. If you have knowledge about specific terms, whether historical documentation or local knowledge, please reach out via the buttons above to contribute to this collective resource.
Your expertise and insights help make this dictionary a more comprehensive and accurate resource for the rope community!
