Definition:

A length of strong cord made by twisting together strands of natural fibers such as hemp or artificial fibers such as polyester.

Notes:

A single length rope is often referred to as a Hank in Shibari

In shibari, rope is doubled over to form a Bight before tying. This means the shibari artist is tying two strands of rope at once. Despite there technically being two ropes, it will still be referred to as one ‘rope’ while terms that define the end of a rope are often use plurally due to there actually being two ends despite them being used as one. Because of this, when a shibari artist wants to cross or tie with only one true rope, they will specify to “split the ropes” meaning to separate the individual ropes and tie with only one instead of two.

There are many kinds of rope in use and here is a table of their basic properties for comparison. This table is a database and selecting any rope will open its full page.
